Man arrested for alleged rape at Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium

A 30-year-old man from Uzbekistan has been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman at the National Stadium of Japan, the central venue for Tokyo 2020.

Kyodo News said the alleged attack took place here on Friday evening (July 16).

Tokyo 2020 said the man “has no connection with the organizing committee and its subcontractors, but works for a contractor involved in part of the running of the Games.”

The man and woman involved are said to have attended a rehearsal for the Olympic opening ceremony, which is due to take place in the stadium on Friday 23 July.

NHK reported that the man involved denied the allegations.

“We know there was an arrest in connection with an incident of sexual assault allegedly taking place inside the Olympic stadium,” Tokyo 2020 said inside the games.

“The suspect has no connection with the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee and its subcontractors, but works for a contractor involved in part of the running of the Games.

“It is extremely regrettable that such an incident has occurred, and it would also undermine confidence in the Tokyo 2020 Games.

“As it is in progress, we cannot comment further.”

The National Stadium of Japan will host the athletics and football finals in Tokyo 2020, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

It was built specifically for the Games, which were delayed for a year due to COVID-19, on the same site as the old stadium used in Tokyo 1964.

The old stadium was demolished in 2015 but the new stadium will be quiet in Tokyo 2020, due to a total spectator ban.
